The Revised Common Lectionary
On December 1, we began a new lectionary year. As part of our Revised Common Lectionary, our rotating three-year cycle of scriptures, we have just begun Year C.
The Revised Common Lectionary was produced by the Consultation on Common Texts, an ecumenical body formed in the mid-1960's for consultation on worship renewal among the Christian churches of the United States and Canada. The RCL gives a scheme of readings for Sundays and a few main feast days or special days in the Church Year. Users of the RCL will read the greater part of the Bible in three years.
This year (Year C) focuses on the Gospel of Luke. The gospel readings in Year A are taken from the Gospel of Matthew, and those in Year B from the Gospel of Mark. Portions of the Gospel of John are read throughout Eastertide each year, and are also used for other liturgical seasons including Advent, Christmastide, and Lent where appropriate. John is also used to fill in Year B, as the Gospel of Mark is shorter than the other two Synoptic Gospels.
The sequence of Gospel readings is designed to assist God’s people into a deeper understanding of Christ and a stronger faith in him. Readings are grouped around the birth, baptism, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Readings from the rest of the New Testament, the Old Testament, and the Psalms round out the selection for each week. From the First Sunday of Advent to Trinity Sunday of each year, the Old Testament reading is closely related to the gospel reading for the day. From the first Sunday after Trinity Sunday to the last Sunday of the church year, provision has been made for two patterns of reading the Old Testament: a complementary series in which the Old Testament reading is closely related to the gospel reading, and a semicontinuous series in which large portions of the Old Testament are read sequentially week to week.
Our lectionary may be found on the PC(USA) website https://www.pcusa.org/devotion/revised-common-lectionary where you may view not only the lectionary for Sundays and special days, but also a separate two-year cycle of daily readings.

MISSION STATEMENT
The First Presbyterian Church of Beeville is called to honor God through: Christ-centered worship, fellowship, outreach, and service encompassing the whole people of God.
The Moravian Star in Our Sanctuary
The Moravian Star is traditionally used during the Christian liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. It represents the Star of Bethlehem, which guided the Wise Men to the birthplace of Jesus. The star serves as a reminder of God’s light shining in the darkness and symbolizes the hope and promise of salvation through Christ.
The Moravian Church teaches that the star signifies the light of Christ, who is referred to as the “bright and Morning Star” in the Bible (Revelation 22:16). This light is seen as a source of life and guidance for humanity, emphasizing themes of hope, fulfillment, and divine promise. The star’s illumination during the dark winter months serves as a metaphor for the light of Christ dispelling darkness.

If there is a name that you would like to add to the prayer list, please contact the church office. Names will be removed after a period of one month unless it is requested that they remain on the list.
