What Happens in Year A?
In Advent, we began Year A of the three-year Revised Common Lectionary cycle. This year’s “gospel of the year” is Matthew. Matthew’s voice is earthy, ethical, rooted in Jewish tradition, and deeply concerned about how the Church lives out the teachings of Jesus. The Old Testament lessons this year are centered around Israel’s identity with scriptures from Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, and Judges that pair beautifully with Matthew’s emphasis on fulfillment and covenant continuity. The epistles this year will come mainly from Romans, Philippians, and 1 Thessalonians, focusing on justification and grace, joy and perseverance, and hope and holy living.
In a nutshell, Year A claims one big message: God’s kingdom is breaking into the world through Jesus — and we are called to live as people shaped by that kingdom.
Everything else is commentary.
And here’s the whole year in one sentence: Year A tells the story of a God who keeps promises, a Messiah who embodies God’s kingdom, and a community called to live that kingdom with integrity, courage, and joy.

The Presbyterian Women's Circle will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 on Thursday, January 8th, with Rita Ramon and Mary Jane Stark hosting. Lesson 4 in this year's study book will be led by Nancy Sugarek. All women are welcome to join the group for a time of fellowship and study.

MISSION STATEMENT
The First Presbyterian Church of Beeville is called to honor God through: Christ-centered worship, fellowship, outreach, and service encompassing the whole people of God.
The Moravian Star in Our Sanctuary
The Moravian Star is traditionally used during the Christian liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. It represents the Star of Bethlehem, which guided the Wise Men to the birthplace of Jesus. The star serves as a reminder of God’s light shining in the darkness and symbolizes the hope and promise of salvation through Christ.
The Moravian Church teaches that the star signifies the light of Christ, who is referred to as the “bright and Morning Star” in the Bible (Revelation 22:16). This light is seen as a source of life and guidance for humanity, emphasizing themes of hope, fulfillment, and divine promise. The star’s illumination during the dark winter months serves as a metaphor for the light of Christ dispelling darkness.

“The Star in the Grocery Aisle”
(As told to an anonymous minister by an anonymous member)
Last week, a member of our congregation told me a story that feels just right for Epiphany.
She had gone to the grocery store after a long day—tired, distracted, and ready to get home. As she stood in line, she noticed the cashier moving slowly, clearly overwhelmed. The line grew impatient. People sighed. Someone muttered under their breath.
But then a small thing happened.
A woman two carts ahead stepped forward, placed her hand gently on the counter, and said to the cashier, “You’re doing great. Take your time. We’re not in a hurry.”
The whole line shifted. Shoulders relaxed. The cashier’s eyes filled with relief. A moment of tension became a moment of grace.
Later, the woman who told me the story said, “It felt like a star appeared right there in aisle three—just enough light to change the whole room.”
Matthew 2:1-2 (NKJV): "Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, ’Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.’”
