ASH WEDNESDAY
February 18, 2026
Ash Wednesday emerged in the early centuries of Western Christianity as a public act of repentance, eventually becoming the doorway into Lent as we know it today. Its meaning is deeply rooted in the Old Testament use of ashes as a sign of mourning and humility, and its current form took shape between the 7th and 10th centuries, but the practice was not originally tied to a specific day.
In the 4th-7th centuries, the early church used a formal process of public penance for “serious sinners”. Penitents wore sackcloth, were sprinkled with ashes, publicly confessed their sin before the bishop, and were excluded from the community and Communion until Maundy Thursday. This practice was not humiliation but a sign of re-entering the path of restoration. It was not until the 7th century that Lent became 40 days long.
As public penance declined, the church extended the ash marking ritual to all believers, symbolizing the universal call to repentance. By the 10th century, Ash Wednesday was considered the official beginning of Lent.
The ashes have traditionally been made by burning the previous year’s Palm Sunday palms and are imposed with words such as, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” or “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” The sign of the cross has twofold significance, marking both mortality and belonging to Christ.
Ash Wednesday is observed with the imposition of ashes by Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, Episcopalians, Moravians, Methodists, many Presbyterians and Reformed churches, and others across Western Christianity. Modern practices include fasting, prayer, and reflection on mortality and grace. Many Christians begin various Lenten practices on this day, and the ritual continues to serve as a reminder that repentance is not shame but invitation: a return to God’s mercy.
